ANIMAL TESTING - HOW BRANDS HIDE THE TRUTH
Animal testing is a very torturous practice that has been in the cosmetic world for a very long time. On the daily I get asked what brands test on animals and also get a few people talking about how Animal testing Companies claim to be cruelty free but aren't intact cruelty free. How exactly?
It's very easy to tell if a cosmetic company is cruelty free or not nowadays, all you need to know is if they produce their products in mainland China. In China there is a law that ALL cosmetics companies must apply to if they want to sell their products there, that is animal testing. So if this certain company sells in China they are indeed testing on animals that you consider as pets and your money is going towards it!
When you buy a product you are voting and showing your support towards that brand out of all the companies in the industry. If a large percentage of customers deny buying from the certain company, the more motivation the company gets to change it's policies. At the end of the day, all companies care about is you (as a consumer) and the money you give them. They want sales.
So a common saying I get told is, 'Well this brand does NOT test in the UK so that technically means I'm not supporting animal testing.' You are indeed supporting them as a whole brand and what they are about (animal testing) when you buy just one product. Like I said before when you buy a product, you are voting for them and bringing their stats up.
For example, MAC is one of the largest brands and are well known for their support of animal testing.. on their website under the FAQ section this is what is provided:
So here we have their statement, notice how they say, 'While some governments conduct animal testing to prove safety before they will allow us to sell our products..' What do they mean by this?
It's fairly simple. They are talking about China's laws and how they STILL sell their products there which means they legally have to test on animals in China. So this brand in fact does test it's products on animals. If MAC were to pull out of the Chinese market they would become a cruelty free brand.
If this Chinese law didn't apply why did popular brand Stila become cruelty free in early 2017? Stila pulled out of the Chinese market in February 2017, which made them a cruelty free company.
